Entry and Departure procedures

Practically a 30-day tourist visa can be obtained from any Embassy of Mongolia abroad within 24 hours for some fee. Additional fees are charged for urgent visa.

Alternatively, those who travel from the Embassy of Mongolia in Beijing or Moscow, or at the arrival points: ‘’Chinggis Khaan’’ International Airport in Ulaanbaatar, “Zamyn Uud” Railway Station on the northern border.

Please keep in mind the following regulations:

  • Visitors staying longer than 30 days are required to apply for registration with the office of Immigration, Naturalization and Foreign Citizens
  • Visitors planning to stay for more than 180 days should obtain a long-term residence permission
  • Visitors are also advised to obtain proper transit visa from China or Russia. There were cases when foreigners who failed to secure two-time transit visa were denied entrance to these countries on their way back home from Mongolia

Although it can vary from a country to country, the following materials are usually required to obtain Mongolia visa:

  1. Valid passport
  2. One passport sized photo
  3. Application form
  4. Either an invitation of the receiving entity (state, government, non-governmental organization, business entity) or an official request of the sending country and the organization,
  • Or, for tourists wishing to stay over 30 days up to 90 days, a letter of invitation from Shaman Travel Agency
  • Or, if you are traveling on a personal invitation of a citizen of Mongolia, an invitation approved by the Office of Immigration, Naturalization and Foreign Citizens of Mongolia, and applicant’s written statement concerning his/her financial credibility to cover his/her stay in Mongolia.
  • Or, for those passing Mongolia in Transit, Onward ticket and visa for next destination are required

Customs: Every traveler must fill in a customs declaration form which should be retained until departure. This allows the free import and re-export of articles intended for personal use for duration of stay. It is prohibited to import and export:

  1. Guns, weapons and ammunitions without special permission
  2. Explosive items
  3. Radioactive substance
  4. Opium, hashish and other narcotics
  5. Publications, records, films and drawing against Mongolia
  6. Research material, paleontological and archaeological findings, collection of various plants and their seeds, birds, wild and domestic animals, wool, raw skins and hides and furs without permissions appropriate Mongolia authorities.
